Clearing Snow Safely This Winter
Clearing snow is hard physical work, especially when the snow is wet and heavy. A few simple habits make it safer for you and your neighbors.
Pace yourself
Warm up first, push snow instead of lifting it when you can, and lift small loads with your legs, not your back. Take regular breaks, and stop right away if you feel chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness.
Use a snow blower safely
- Never clear a jam with your hands; turn the machine off and use a clearing tool.
- Fill the gas tank outdoors, before you start, while the engine is cold.
- Never run it in a closed garage because of carbon monoxide.
- Keep children and pets well away while it’s running.
Dress for the cold
Wear layers, a hat, gloves and boots with good grip. Watch for icy patches under the snow.
Help the neighborhood
Clear sidewalks and the area around fire hydrants and storm drains near your home, and check on older neighbors who may need a hand.
